Laundry can be harmful to your health BY: TOMICA BONNER

Wet laundry hanging around the house is not ideal for those who suffer from hay fever, asthma or other allergies. The wet laundry can account for up to a third of moisture in the air in your home. It’s important to keep a well ventilated area to prevent creating an allergic reaction.

According to Mackintosh Environmental Architecture Research Unit (MEARU) moisture is known to cause dust mites and mold spores. It is best to avoid drying clothing on top of radiators or driers. It is a known fact that 96% of households dry their clothes this way at some point during the year. However, this has the effect of sending moisture into the air; thereby creating situations where it may be hard to breathe.

When laundry is placed in an area that isn’t well ventilated it can add an addition third of the moisture in the air. Because of this added moisture it can cause excess growth of dust mites and mold spores which can cause asthma.

The use of a tumble drier will prevent moisture from getting into the air. It is also a good idea to consider drying your clothes outdoors during sunny weather.
