Helpful Laundry Room Storage Ideas By: Organization1

Keeping a laundry room organized and uncluttered can be a difficult task. In most homes, the laundry room is a relatively small space, so there is not a lot of room for shelves or cabinets. The number of laundry products used by most consumers has risen over the years. We’ve gone well beyond soap, bleach, and starch to have many other products for specialized tasks, such as fabric softeners and products to remove stains from clothes.

Many people use the laundry room as a place to store miscellaneous items they may not have room for in the closets or other storage areas around the house. This puts a premium on storage cabinets or shelf space and makes thoughtful organizing of the laundry room all the more important.

The design of some homes leaves the laundry area visible from other rooms of the house such as the kitchen. A messy laundry room can detract from the impression you want guests to have of your home. Why spend all that time keeping a spotless kitchen when a few feet away, guests can see piles of clothes and a confused collection of bottles and cans of laundry care products. In any case living in a home that is not well organized adds unnecessary stress to our lives.

There’s more involved than just organizing the laundry products; storing the clothes as they transition from dirty to clean and ready to wear also presents a challenge. You need to be able to quickly put clothes that come out of the dryer on hangars to prevent wrinkling. You don’t want to inadvertently mix the clean and dirty clothes. And it is convenient to have storage shelves where you can put clothes that are clean and folded before returning them to the rooms where they will be stored.

Fortunately there are many clever and innovate products to help you turn a disorganized laundry room into one that is neat and efficient. Some of the products are portable; others are attached to doors or walls.

One great solution is a Roll-Out Laundry Caddy that fits nicely between the washer and dryer. The caddy has three spacious shelves so you can store virtually every product you might need on washday. It rolls in and out easily on its dual track casters. The shelves have raised side rails to keep products in place as it is moved, and the unit is constructed of durable melamine.

Similar in concept are Narrow Wicker Drawers that go between the washer and dryer. The drawers slide in and out with the cabinet staying in place. Laundry products are kept out of sight, and the cabinet fronts are designed to resemble hand-woven wicker.

Suction Utility Shelves are another approach to laundry product storage. These can be quickly mounted on the side of the washer or dryer. This is a great idea for very cramped laundry rooms.

Hanging the clothes when they come out of the dryer can be accomplished by installing shelves that have a hanging bar suspended from them. If you don’t have room for permanent shelves, a portable solution is the Supreme Laundry Center. This rollaway cart has a handy canvas and mesh sorter bag on the bottom shelf and a chromed hanging bar that accommodates 25 or more garments.

The Overdoor Laundry Hanger is a space saving way of temporarily storing up to ten garments on hangers. It attaches to the top of the laundry room door and the locking hinge folds down when not in use. The inside of the metal bracket is padded with felt so the unit will not scratch the door.

The Rolling Laundry Station provides two shelves for storing detergent or other supplies, or to place folded clean laundry. There is also a convenient slide out wire basket for smaller items that need to be accessed. The other side of the cart has a removable canvas bag for storing clothes that will be washed. Rolling casters allow for easy movement of the cart around the room, or storing it out of sight.

The space between the washer or dryer and the wall is often wasted space. You need to leave room for the electrical cords and hoses. The Washing Machine Wire Shelf makes use of this space, by mounting on top of the washer or dryer. It provides plenty of storage for the frequently used laundry products such as detergent and fabric softener. The finish of the shelf brackets is coated so it will not scratch the metal on the washer or dryer unit.

A compact way to keep the tools you need for ironing close by and easy to reach is the Over the Door Iron Board Holder, which can be used to hold any ironing board that is a “T” style. The unit is designed to hang over the door but can also be mounted to the wall. The three metal storage compartments hold an iron and two bottles, ideal for starch or other fabric sprays.
